Integrated CO₂ Capture and Conversion to Methanol Leveraged by the Transfer Hydrogenation Approach

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation of chemically captured CO2 toward MeOH production utilizing ethylene glycol as the hydride donor has been established under mild reaction conditions by employing a Ru(II)–CNN pincer catalyst (CNN = CNHC^Npyridine^Nbenzimidazole tridentate ligand) and tertiary amine tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA). Through cooperative action with glycol, TMEDA was found to be most effective in this integrated capture/conversion protocol achieve high 64% yield up 112 catalytic turnovers. Dilute stream (10% N2) could also utilized provide ∼70% MeOH. Involvement Ru–H active species process, generated from traced via spectroscopic investigation. Considering that can produced renewable bioresource (e.g., nonfood biomass), developed CO2-to-MeOH prior efficient CO2-capturing process represents prospective approach complementary existing platforms which typically use fossil-derived H2 gas pressure setup.
